6th Grade Service and Outdoor School Pics!!

Image
Hi, families, Today your child is bringing home a planning sheet for their sixth grade service. They have done the pre-planning in class to think about what service they want to do. They are to complete their service by Monday, November 26th. This service does not need to be elaborate. The service should fill a need in a community to which they belong (neighborhood, sports community, religious community, school community, etc.) We discussed that service is not charity, so they are providing direct service, NOT fundraising. They will be creating a brochure during our community class time, so they should be thinking about that ahead if time in case they want to include photos in their brochure. Here are a ton of photos from ODS! Sorry so late! Heather :) Ask your child to tell you about these photos...

Our First Week in Community/School Skills and Math

Hi, families of sixth graders, I hope your children are enjoying our time together in 6th grade community and math! So far, we have had two days together since staring on Wednesday because all classes traveled to a fountain on Thursday, and had class again on Friday. This coming week we will be together all days but Thursday. Don't forget, we have NO school this Monday. I showed your children a growth mindset math video this week, which I'm linking here . Be sure to watch this video  at least once, even if they say, "I already watched this" and bookmark it for those times when you feel your child may need a reminder of their capabilities. We spent much of our first community and math blocks getting to know each other by having a greeting, a game and some time to talk about how middle school has been going. I asked, "What has been hard about middle school so far?" I had intended to talk about what has been good, too, but they had so much to say about wha

Welcome to 6th Grade Math and Community

Hi, sixth grade grade math community! Heather here, and I am so excited to be your child's afternoon math and community/school skills teacher! This is my thirteenth year at Sunnyside, and I am returning to middle school after ten years teaching third grade. I began my teaching career here at Sunnyside teaching middle school for both the forest and river years, and I am back as a Year of the Forest Teacher. My afternoons with your children will include a one hour block of m ath, and a one hour block of school skills, community building, racial equity work, goal setting, and play.  The intention of including  the block of a sixth-grade-only cohort is to help transition your child into middle school, help develop positive school relationships, skills, and habits, and to build a classroom family of fellow sixth graders.     Please be sure to sign up for auto updates on the blog's right sidebar, please bookmark the blog, and check it with your student regularly.
